Job Description:
Fermilab offers a diverse array of internship programs for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, secondary school teachers, and professionals in the UK and internationally. These programs provide hands-on experience in particle physics and accelerator science, allowing participants to work alongside world-renowned scientists and engineers on cutting-edge research projects.
Responsibilities:
- Assist researchers with ongoing projects
- Conduct research and analysis of experimental data
- Contribute to the development and testing of new technologies
- Learn about particle accelerators, detectors, and other scientific equipment
- Participate in data collection and analysis (for some internships)
- Create presentations and reports (for some internships)

Requirements:
- Strong interest in physics and scientific research

Skills (depending on the internship):
- Programming experience (Python, C++, etc.) (for some internships)
- Data analysis and visualization tools (a plus)
- Electronics or mechanical engineering skills (for some internships)
- Understanding of physics concepts (mechanics, electricity & magnetism)
Qualification:
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field
Experience
- Previous research experience (in any field)
- Relevant coursework in physics, engineering, or computer science
- Participation in science fairs, research projects, or hackathons

Professional Internships:
DOE Omni Technology Alliance Internship:
- Paid 10-week summer internships for up to three consecutive summers for talented undergraduate and graduate students in cybersecurity, IT, and related fields.
Fermilab QIS Summer Institute for K-12 STEM Educators:
- Content training in the field of Quantum Information Science (QIS) for K-12 STEM Educators.
Science Writing Internship:
- Provides the opportunity to write for Fermilab’s online publications, including press releases and feature articles.
Teacher Research Associates (TRAC):
- Offers professional summer research experiences for outstanding science, mathematics, computer science, and technology teachers.
VALOR Apprenticeship:
- A paid, six-month fall/spring training and career exploration program for military veterans and recent Illinois JROTC high school graduates.
VetTech:
- Paid 10-week internships for military veterans to provide routine technical support for an assigned experiment or support group.
Visiting Faculty Program (VFP):
- Provides 10-week summer hands-on research experiences at Fermilab for faculty and student teams from community colleges and four-year institutions historically underrepresented in the research community.
